With money being wicked tight I can't afford much more than rice and beans let alone a climbing gym membership which had me interested in exploring the bouldering in Central Park as well as a few parks in Harlem and the Bronx. I picked up a guide the other day (leaving 54 cents in my bank account) and set forth to scout it out. Today Lauren met me in Central Park South to check out the 4 boulders in the area and to climb a little. The grading is STEEP.. at my old gym I could easily flash every V3 and here I struggle with many of what is considered V0. While it was great to be on real rock, it is a totally different experience. The risk of injury (or death if you're on Cat Rock adds a lot of hesitation which dampens my ability and confidence. The rock is also a lot sharper than what I am used to. Overall it was a great time and honestly it needs to be as these boulders will be my regular gym from here on out for better or for worse.
Lauren also had a good time, and was able to send every route on Chess Rock with the exception of the final traverse which she was pretty bummed about. As painful as it may be, it's always good to leave with some unfinished business to fuel the next adventure.
